April 1972 - 64th Annual AEU Assembly

THE LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA

WHEREAS, the present policy of treating as a crime the possession and use as well as the transfer, manufacture and sale of marijuana leads to exorbitant enforcement costs, loss of respect for the law by youth in America, and serious disruption of careers through harsh penalties;

WHEREAS, the present effort at enforcement of marijuana laws tends to set one group of society against another,

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that we urge state and federal legislative bodies to take proper steps toward the repeal of present laws and the enactment of new laws so constructed as to define proper conditions permitting the use, possession, manufacture, sale and transfer of marijuana by adults similar to present laws affecting the manufacture, sale, transfer, use and possession of tobacco and alcohol in American society.
